A tie tack is a short pin with an embellished head. Chains or snaps connect the tack to shirts. The chain keeps the tie secure by lying across the necktie. Tie tacks, sometimes referred to as a tie pins, come in a variety of styles, from sports team logos to classic business looks, but they all serve the same purpose. A tie tack is inserted into a tie in order to keep the long ends in place, which helps keep the tie out of food or drink.
You want to place the tie tack somewhere that will keep your tie from flying all over the place in the wind and also keep it in place when you are bending over, such as when you are eating or drinking water at a water fountain. The tie tack gives your necktie body and helps it keep its form. In pulling big things together, it's often the little things that count, and the tie tack is no exemption.
Tie your tie as you normally would. Make sure that the end of the tie is somewhere above your belt line or just below it, depending on the length of the tie and how you want to wear it.
How to wear a tie tack. Placing the tie tack in the proper place
A tie tack consists of two different parts: a decorative pin and a base, chained to a metal crosspiece. Donning a tie tack is a rather complicated procedure. The first time you use a tie tack, inserting it into your tie can be a bit confusing, but if you follow a few simple steps you will have it in place in no time.
- Locate one of the buttons of your shirt at around your midsection or slightly higher. The ideal position is the button which is just below the middle of the tie.
- Then pull the tie tack apart by separating the pin from the base - squeeze gently on the center of the tie tack fastener and pull it away from and off of the tie tack base. The tie tack will come in two pieces, the front part or the fashionable part that others will see is the pin portion. The back side or the base of the tie tack is the section that will be placed in the button hole.
- Unbutton the button at the level that you want to place the tie tack. Now insert the metallic crosspiece front-to-back through your chosen buttonhole. Button up and push the pin through the tie centered left-to-right, at around the same height as your chosen button.
- Align the tie tack at the same level as the button. Push the tie tack pin through the tie making certain that it is centered. Once it has gone through the entire tie, locate the base and insert the tie tack into the base. The tie tack should now be in place and it’s finally done.
You can test the tie tack by bending over to see where your tie lands or you can just push the bottom of your tie outwards to see where it ends up. If you feel that your tie is still flopping all over the place then simply remove and readjust your tie tack lower so that it is where you want it to be. If it is too low then remove and readjust and place it a little higher. Placement of the tie tack should serve to be both fashionable and functional.
